Introduction
Why Trauma-Sensitive Witnessing & Soul-Winning Is Urgently Needed
The call to witness and disciple must evolve in today’s emotionally fragile world. Trauma-Sensitive Witnessing acknowledges the deep wounds people carry and aims to restore their hope before preaching change. Without sensitivity to trauma, even the most well-intentioned outreach can re-traumatize or push away souls longing for safety and healing.
These services and any study guide were borne out of over 50 years of evangelistic and pastoral leadership by Dr. Sandy D. Murphy, who has seen first-hand the damage of emotionally detached ministry; and the power of compassionate soul-winning. Trauma-Sensitive Witnessing is a healing movement disguised as outreach. It bridges compassion to trauma and transformation through ACEs, or Adverse Childhood Experiences inner-healing methods that refer to traumatic events that occur in a child's life before the age of 18. It restores the voice of the silenced, helps build trust where betrayal once ruled, and equips believers to carry truth with sensitivity.
Understanding ACEs: The 10 Categories of Childhood Trauma ACEs, or Adverse Childhood Experiences, refer to traumatic events that occur in a child's life before the age of 18. These events affect how individuals respond emotionally and spiritually as adults. To witness effectively, we must recognize these roots.
Here are the 10 ACEs:
- Physical Abuse: Being physically hurt or threatened by a caregiver or adult.
- Emotional Abuse: Constant criticism, threats, or rejection by a parent or household member.
- Sexual Abuse: Any form of unwanted sexual contact by a household member or trusted adult.
- Physical Neglect: Basic needs like food, shelter, or safety were not consistently met.
- Emotional Neglect: Feeling unloved, unimportant, or emotionally abandoned by parents.
- Household Mental Illness: Living with someone who had a diagnosed or undiagnosed mental health issue.
- Household Substance Abuse: A parent or family member used drugs or alcohol in a way that harmed the family.
- Domestic Violence: Seeing or hearing violence between caregivers or adults at home.
- Parental Separation or Divorce: Losing the stability of a home due to broken family structure.
- Incarcerated Household Member: Living with or being raised by someone who was imprisoned.
These ACEs impact how people perceive God, authority, love, and healing. Trauma-Sensitive Witnessing helps us build a bridge of trust and tenderness so souls can receive truth without fear. Our prayer is that this guide equips you not just to win souls; but to intentionally love them with all the sensitive parts of their hearts.
